Why Refurbish Rather Than Replace?
Replacing an industrial valve is not always necessary.
In many applications, the existing valve body and major components can be retained while worn or damaged components are repaired or replaced.
Valve refurbishment can provide a cost-effective alternative to buying a new valve, while retaining the existing installation and helping to reduce downtime.
Refurbishment can be particularly useful where:
The valve body is still suitable for service
Wear is concentrated in replaceable components
Replacement valves are expensive or difficult to source
The existing valve has been specially designed for the application
Changing the valve would require modifications to surrounding pipework
The valve is obsolete or no longer readily available
A modification or upgrade is required at the same time as the repair
Where refurbishment is not the best option, we can advise on replacement equipment or a modified valve design.
Our Industrial Valve Refurbishment Process
Every valve is assessed individually. The exact work required depends on its condition, application and expected future service.
Inspection and assessment The valve is inspected before refurbishment to establish its condition and identify areas of wear or damage. Where appropriate, we can work from photographs and nameplate information initially to establish whether refurbishment is likely to be practical.
Complete strip-down The valve is completely dismantled so that individual components can be inspected rather than simply repairing the visible problem.
Cleaning and shot blasting Components are cleaned and, where appropriate, shot blasted to remove contamination, corrosion, old paint and accumulated material. This allows worn or damaged areas to be properly assessed.
Component inspection Individual components are inspected for: Wear Corrosion Damage Distortion Excessive clearances Damaged threads Worn supports and rollers Worn sealing surfaces Where required, measurements and wear information can be recorded as part of the refurbishment process.
Repair and replacement Depending on the condition of the valve, we can repair or replace worn components. This can include: Valve bodies Rotors Shafts Slide plates Supports Rollers Seat rings Gland components Bearings Gaskets Seals Studs and threaded components Chains and sprockets Other application-specific components Where required, replacement components can be manufactured in-house to suit the original valve and application.
Modifications and upgrades Refurbishment also provides an opportunity to modify the valve where required. Examples include: Scrapers Position indication Limit switches Inductive or proximity sensors Pneumatic actuation Hydraulic actuation New cylinders Linkages Redesigned supports Other application-specific modifications We will discuss any additional work discovered during refurbishment before carrying it out.
Reassembly and adjustment The refurbished valve is reassembled and adjusted to ensure the components operate correctly and the required clearances and travel are achieved.
Testing The completed valve is trialled and tested before despatch
Painting and despatch Once refurbishment and testing are complete, the valve can be repainted as required before being prepared for return to the customer.
Rotary Valve Refurbishment Rotary valves and rotary feeders operating in abrasive bulk-material applications can experience significant wear to the valve body, rotor, shafts, bearings and sealing arrangements.
Typical Applications Our rotary valve refurbishment experience includes equipment used for: Cement · Clinker · Aggregates · Fly Ash · Sand · Grains · Flour · Animal Feed
Typical refurbishment work Depending on the condition of the valve, refurbishment can include: Complete strip-down and shot blasting Inspection and recording of component wear Reboring and machining of the main valve body Rebuilding worn body surfaces Refurbishment or replacement of rotors Replacement shafts Replacement blades Replacement bearings Replacement gland packing and gaskets Replacement motors, sprockets and chains Reassembly and adjustment Trial testing Repainting The exact refurbishment work required is determined after inspection of the individual valve.
Diverter Valve Refurbishment European Gate Valves refurbishes heavy-duty and light-duty diverter valves, including FLS and IBAU valves as well as custom-built diverter valves. Diverter valves used in abrasive bulk-material applications can experience significant wear to the valve body, legs, diverter cap, seat rings and other internal components. Refurbishment allows the valve to be stripped down and each component assessed before deciding what can be repaired, refurbished or replaced.
Typical Applications Our diverter valve refurbishment experience includes equipment used in: Cement · Fly Ash · Bulk Material Handling
Typical refurbishment work Depending on the condition of the valve, refurbishment can include: Complete strip-down and shot blasting Inspection and recording of component wear Rebuilding worn areas of the valve body and legs Replacement or refurbishment of seat rings Replacement of diverter caps Replacement gland packing and gaskets Replacement or repair of worn components New position indication Limit, inductive or proximity switches Replacement motors Pneumatic equipment and linkages Reassembly and adjustment Trial testing Repainting The exact refurbishment work required is determined after inspection of the individual valve.
Slide Valve Refurbishment European Gate Valves refurbishes standard and custom slide valves, including Reiss valves and other industrial slide valve designs. Slide valves used for isolation and bulk-material handling can experience wear to the slide plates, gate supports, sealing arrangements, hydraulic or pneumatic systems and other working components. Refurbishment allows the valve to be stripped down and each component assessed before deciding what can be repaired, refurbished or replaced.
Typical Applications Our slide valve refurbishment experience includes equipment used for: Isolation · Aggregates · Coal · Feed · Bulk Material Handling
Typical Refurbishment Work Depending on the condition of the valve, refurbishment can include: Complete strip-down and shot blasting Inspection and recording of component wear Replacement or refurbishment of slide plates Replacement or repair of gate supports Replacement gland packing and gaskets Repair or replacement of worn components New position indication Limit, inductive or proximity switches Replacement or refurbishment of hydraulic or pneumatic systems Replacement or repair of linkages Reassembly and adjustment Trial testing Repainting The exact refurbishment work required is determined after inspection of the individual valve.
Double Flap Valve European Gate Valves refurbishes double flap valves and discharge valves used for controlled discharge and isolation of bulk materials. Refurbishment is carried out on both standard and custom valve designs, with the valve stripped down and each component inspected to determine what can be repaired, refurbished or replaced. Double flap valves operate in demanding bulk-material applications where repeated cycling, abrasive material and dust can cause wear to the flaps, seats, shafts, bearings, linkages and actuation system.
Typical Applications Our double flap valve refurbishment experience includes equipment used for: Cement · Lime · Aggregates · Minerals · Fly Ash · Coal · Bulk Material Handling
Typical Refurbishment Work Depending on the condition and design of the valve, refurbishment can include: Complete strip-down and shot blasting Inspection and recording of component wear Refurbishment or replacement of flap plates Repair or replacement of valve seats Repair or replacement of shafts and bushes Replacement of bearings and seals Repair or replacement of linkages Refurbishment or replacement of pneumatic or hydraulic actuators Replacement of position indication Replacement of limit, inductive or proximity switches Repair of worn or damaged valve body components Reassembly and adjustment Trial testing Repainting The exact refurbishment work required is determined after inspection of the individual valve, allowing components to be repaired or replaced according to their actual condition rather than replacing complete assemblies unnecessarily.
